Size wise, yes 312 is heavy and thicker but it does give a wrist presence.
I was recently looking at both myself.I'll just add specs directly from Panerai on case thickness: 312 is 18.1mm thick, and 1312 is 15.6mm thick. I think the lugs and crown protector are noticeably thinner as well on the 1312.
