Corbett details his experience as both a contractor and mercenary in the newly released book, American Mercenary, The Riveting, High-Risk World of an Elite SEAL Team Operator Turned Hired Gun. We spoke with Corbett to learn more about his career and the role of the Rolex Submariner. Why was it worn on this raid? Was it for Escape and Evasion- a potential bartering tool? Was it chosen for its robustness as a mechanical timepiece, mitigating the risk of battery failure? The answer is actually simple–but far more profound. The SEAL wearing the Sub, Will Chesney, believed he was going to die that night in Pakistan. Rolex is inextricably linked to SEAL history, particularly of the Vietnam Era. In Vietnam, SEALs wore blue jeans and tiger stripes and carried stoner machine guns while using issued Tudor 7928s or Rolex Submariners to time their operations and combat dives. In the late 1950s, the Royal Navy came knocking on Rolex’s door. It was looking for a timepiece that would hold up to the rigors of combat with which to equip its most elite forces. The Crown responded with the reference 6538 Submariner, 50 of which were furnished to Her Majesty’s government.
In this case, the watch in question is a Tudor Submariner reference 7928 that was issued to a U.S. Navy SEAL team member as a duty watch during his training in the notoriously brutal BUD/S training course (Basic Underwater Demolition/SEALS). James Badge Dale, above, who plays retired Navy SEAL Tyrone "Rone" Woods, wears a Rolex Submariner 116610 in Michael Bay's movie "13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi" which is streamable now on Netflix. Crown: Rolex adapted its water-resistant, screw-down crown design from the 1920s — which used a gasket and a receiving tube housed within the watch case — for use on the Submariner. The Twinlock system made use of two O-rings for a water-resistant seal, while the more modern Triplock system from the 1970s uses an additional O-ring.
